I am a provisionally accepted Part II of the Register of Practitioner, how do I notify the Academy of Law of my first appearance before the DIFC Courts?

A

Provisionally accepted practitioners should contact the Academy of Law by telephone or e-mail to [email protected] at least 7 business days in advance of their first appearance before the DIFC Courts so that arrangements may be made for the Registrar, Deputy Registrar, Assistant Registrar or the Legal Conduct Officer to be present.

Do I need to be registered with the Academy of Law to practice in arbitrations in the DIFC?

A

Registration with the Academy of Law is not required for participation in arbitrations that are not before the DIFC Courts.

Q

Can I make payment for a Registration or Renewal with my firm’s credit facility with the DIFC Courts?

A

The Academy of Law does not accept payments made with a credit facility used with the DIFC Courts.

Q

How may I confirm if a lawyer is registered with my firm under Part I or under Part II?

A

Our Register of Practitioners is available online. To view the current list of firms registered in Part I and practitioners registered in Part II, please click here. Please note that it may take 24-48 hours processing time for new registrants to appear on this list.

My registration has lapsed, how may I be added to the Register of Practitioners again?

A

Registrations that have lapsed must send an e-mail to [email protected] requesting a new registration. The applicant will be subject to the initial registration fees.

Are there mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) or Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements for registered practitioners with the Academy of Law?

A

The Dubai Legal Affairs Departments CLPD requirement for all legal consultants registered with both the LAD and the Academy of Law s is to attend the Mandatory training course of the Academy of Law. This requirement applies to legal consultants registered with the Academy of Law in both Part I and Part II.

Do Part I registered practitioners also require Part II registration to appear in DIFC Courts?

A

Yes, only Part II registration confers Rights of Audience to practitioners. Part I lawyers can issue and conduct proceedings by inter alia (a) signing Statements of Truth; (b) corresponding with the Registry regarding a case or the progression of a case; and (c) corresponding with opposing lawyers
