Join the DIFC Academy and Georgetown University for a masterclass on the Innovation Lifecycle of Emerging Technologies!

Basic and applied research are interdependent and interconnected components of the innovation lifecycle. Basic research is considered the birthplace of breakthrough ideas, and is often measured by scientific publications. Applied research is considered the workplace where these ideas are developed and become practical applications, and is often measured by patents.
This DIFC Community masterclass considers several emergent technologies that have had a meaningful disruptive impact. It then examines whether pioneer regions that lead in a scientific area maintain an advantage over non-pioneer regions in producing innovations in the same area. The baseline results indicate that pioneer regions can establish and grow their patenting advantage over non-pioneer regions in number, impact, and novelty. These results suggest important industry and public policy implications.
